What a crushed transition hose is actually doing back there

The hose behind the dryer is the part that burns. White vinyl and thin foil hold lint in every ridge, and a kink turns into a packed plug. Exhaust then backs up into the cabinet. That puts heat and lint near the heating element. Waiting also costs you in slower ways. Two or three cycles for a load of towels means the machine is running hot against its own limit switch.

Most failures we find are geometry, not age. Shallow Duval laundry closets leave a few inches behind the machine. The hose gets folded flat when the dryer is pushed back. A rigid offset fitting solves that permanently, since it does not compress.

Replacement material matters. Code allows a limited length of transition duct, it must stay exposed, and it cannot run inside a wall or ceiling. Foil-backed flex marked to the UL standard for transition ducts is the usual choice. Clamps, not screws, at both collars. Screws catch lint.

Second-floor and garage-ceiling runs deserve a look at the same visit. If the concealed duct is wet-matted with lint, a new hose changes nothing. In humid Jacksonville air, that condensed mat is the real restriction.
